Summary

A soul-stirring novel about what we choose to keep from our past, and what we choose to leave behind。

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over。 Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising a beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side。 She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in, and taking over her father's beekeeping business。

Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too。 When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start。

And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need。 Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too。 With Ash, she feels happy for the first time。 Yet at times, she wonders if she can she trust him completely 。 。 。

Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police。 Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent。 But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in him, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her。

Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves。

The story dragged on longer than needed but I loved learning about bees and insight into the transgender world。

Thoroughly enjoyed this one, particularly because of the loving care of Jenny Finney Boylan who brought depth and nuance to the character of Lily。

Honestly, when I thought of reading this book, the only thing that stood out to me was that it was written by Jodi Picoult。 It wasn't really until the afterward that it really set in that this book was co-authored。 Honestly, by reading the book, you would NEVER know that it written by two different people。 Their writing seemed to jive/mesh so well together! I am a super-fan of Jodi Picoult, however, I've never read anything by Jennifer Finney Boylan, so I will definitely be looking into her books after Mad Honey。Honestly, I don't think there is one single thing not to love about this book but I really appreciate the detail the author's go into in describing working with bees and honey! That information was fascinating to me and fit in with the story so well! You can tell these ladies did their due diligence when it came down to researching the subject matter of everything involved with this book! One thing that I love about Jodi Picoult books is her subject matter! You better believe she is going to write about the taboo topics that no one else wants to touch, and she does so masterfully! Mad Honey is no different。 I really don't want to get into why because I don't want to give any spoilers, but just know that she lives up to her reputation and delivers on it beautifully, once again! This is one of those books that was so easy to devour because you feel a connection to the story (whether you have anything to do with the topic or not), as well as the characters and you just have to continue reading to find out what is going to happen。 I also appreciate the bit of mystery that was in this book!Mad Honey is narrated a stellar cast consisting of Carrie Coon and Key Taw, with the afterward read by each author。 They seemed to fit this book perfectly! I'll definitely be looking for more titles narrated by them in the future!Overall, this was a magnificent performance by this duo of writers that won't leave you disappointed。 It's only going to leave you anxiously anticipating their next work (which I hope is another collaboration together)。 From the subject, to the characters, to the absolute perfection of writing, you cannot go wrong with this book! This is easily going to be one of my favorite books of 2022!!**I would like to offer a HUGE THANK YOU to Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan, Random Publishing House Group/Ballantine and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of Mad Honey which has allowed me to provide this honest and unbiased review。** 。。。more

I have always enjoyed Jodi Pilcout's novels。 Never read one where she collaborated with anyone。 Not sure I like that! Frankly, I was not expecting to be indoctrinated in that subject 。 It seems to me that lately every book I have read has all the woke culture dialogue。 What has happened to just a good story about people who are not "they, them" or whatever the new language is。 I have always enjoyed Jodi Pilcout's novels。 Never read one where she collaborated with anyone。 Not sure I like that! It features great characters, interesting moral dilemmas, and has an intriguing air of mystery running throughout it。We’re seeing things through the eyes of multiple characters: Olivia (mother of Asher, accused of murdering his high school girlfriend) and Lily, who is (/was) Asher’s girlfriend – for Lily’s chapters we see things in the lead-up to her death。 Asher maintains his innocent, but the evidence seems stacked against him…There are some great twists in this novel including one which took me by surprise, and meant that the first half of the book felt quite distinct from the second, but not in a bad way – I loved both parts, but the second half definitely brought some different, important themes to the fore。 I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll leave it at that in terms of the plot itself。I loved the courtroom scenes and the jumping backwards and forwards in time, as we slowly uncover what exactly was happening with Asher and Lily。 I liked that the characters are not perfect – they all have their faults in different ways。 Nothing is too black & white in their characters which feels much more realistic than when we are expected to believe that someone is perfect。I thought I’d tire of the information about bees (Olivia is a Beekeeper) but I found it really interesting, and the love story elements of this novel are done really well and never felt too cheesy。Mad Honey is a gripping, addictive read and I hugely enjoyed it。Many thanks to the publisher, Hodder & Stoughton, for providing a copy of this book on which I chose to write an honest review。 。。。more

I couldn’t put this book down after about 150 pages。 I hadn’t read the synopsis so I didn’t know what the book was about。 Up until around page 150 to me it was a typical teenage romance and their families in Smalltown USA。 But then came the first twist but it didn’t stop there。 I loved “hearing” the story from two points of view and had my own theory of what happened。 I was wrong! I read almost half this book and decided to not finish it。 This book is garbage and I should just remember that I don’t like Jodi Picoult books—too much of her own agenda and we simply do not agree on many topics—abortion, transgender, gender reassignment, teenage sex, on and on。 Any hot topic and she covers it…in one book and we are being taught a lesson。 Also, bees are fascinating but she goes way too in-depth with bees。This book has lots of the F-word and descriptive teenage sex, physical abu I read almost half this book and decided to not finish it。 This book is garbage and I should just remember that I don’t like Jodi Picoult books—too much of her own agenda and we simply do not agree on many topics—abortion, transgender, gender reassignment, teenage sex, on and on。 Any hot topic and she covers it…in one book and we are being taught a lesson。 Also, bees are fascinating but she goes way too in-depth with bees。This book has lots of the F-word and descriptive teenage sex, physical abuse, suicide attempts and I’m sure there is more but I put it down。 。。。more

I am a Christian who believes the Biblical definition of gender (man, woman)。 Here’s the thing, though: I live in a world where people do not believe the Bible。 So my moral compass is not theirs。 Read this to understand the other side。 Did it challenge my thinking? Yes。 Do I still believe the Biblical definition of gender? Also, yes。 Conservative Christians- we are called to love those with differing beliefs/moral compasses and this (beautifully written!) story will help。

Five heart wrenching stars! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Not at all what I expected。 Interesting read since I have no experience with “Trans” individuals。 I found it to be slightly one sided in the sense that the general population victimizes these individuals。 Felt like it made the rest of the world out to be uneducated and cruel。 I’m sure that is the case in some circumstances。 Found it depressing that the “trans” individual appeared no happier than before the transition。
